Family Recipe Books Make Great Fundraising Products    by Andy Barber

It’s time for your organization’s yearly fundraiser. It could be for a charity or perhaps to fill the coffers to simply pay your club’s bills. Regardless, it must be done right to be worth your while.

What Kind Of Fundraiser?

What could you do? I see high school cheerleading teams holding car washes in parking lots, but the group I’m in consists of people age 50 and older. I don’t think we’d look that good in swimsuits, so that won’t work. How about a bake sale? All that would require is everyone in the group spend hours an hours baking and cooking, then hauling the goodies to a central location where you spend the entire afternoon selling plates of cookies at $1.50 a pop. Doesn’t sound very cost/time effective. Hey! A chili feed! That will only take hours of preparation, paying for the paper plates and plastic spoons, a half dozen or more people to serve and cook, and at least that many people to clean the kitchen and the dining area mess when it is over. Bzzzzt! Too much work and not enough return.

The Answer

What about a project that involves most everyone in the organization, but doesn’t take hours and hours of hard work? Perhaps something that everyone can enjoy to one degree or another. How about something that brings in a fair amount of money, but still makes the buyers feel they are getting a bargain? The answer is…fundraising cookbooks.

Why A Cookbook?

Yes, the good ol’ family style cookbook is a tremendous fundraising product. Groups have been selling them for years with great success, so why not employ that same success with yours? A personalized cookbook consisting of cherished recipes from the best cooks in Your Own community would be a very popular item. We all know of someone who has a famous dish that people rave about. Aunt Sadie’s apple pie, or Mr. Bradbury’s secret barbecued brisket, for example. Once you convince them to let you have their recipes you can have them printed in a professional looking cookbook and watch them practically sell themselves.

How Do I Do It?

To answer your next question I’ll say, “Find a reputable cookbook publisher. They will have all the tools and options you need to design and create a fantastic cookbook.” It’s true. There are quite a number of cookbook publishers out there, but only a few have been around for a long time. Pick one of them because they must be doing something right to be in business for all those years. Look for a company that allows you to get involved in the design, format, and size. And almost as important as all the other facets of cookbook publishing, find one that offers a guarantee. They are out there if you look. If you follow their recommendations they can guarantee success. You have nothing to lose, so start today.

About the Author

Andy Barber writes for Cookbook Publishers, which is a company that has been printing fundraising cookbooks since 1947. I guess you could say that they must know what they are doing. When he isn’t writing or enjoying his family on his 6 acre “farm” in eastern Kansas, he is riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle across the US to visit friends and see the country.
